How Things Work – Season 4 – Common Ground!

Back in the day, when I used to have hair on my head, we used to walk from town to town to visit friends.

One of these afternoons, my friend and I were heading to see a third friend.

On the way there, we got stopped by an old couple asking us for driving directions to a nearby town, my friend was such a dandy and gave them directions.

They drove away, but at the 25 meters mark (I measured), that car started swaying right and left, the man was pointing his hand to the right, the woman to the left.

I knew what happened, my friend told the couple that the town can be reached by taking the next left turn…while pointing his right hand to the right!

(It doesn’t matter what happened afterwards, that was like 20 years ago so they are probably dead anyway!)

In logic, equivocation (‘calling two different things by the same name’) is an informal fallacy resulting from the use of a particular word/expression in multiple senses within an argument.[1][2]

It is a type of ambiguity that stems from a phrase having two or more distinct meanings, not from the grammar or structure of the sentence.[1]
